The Benefits of LCD Computer Monitors

To discuss LCD computer monitors properly, we should first define the term “LCD”. It stands for liquid crystal display, and it is quite different from a CRT, or cathode ray tube. CRT monitors are the boxy, bulky, heavy ones that have been the standard for personal computers for many years. LCD computer monitors are the thin, usually rectangular, lightweight ones that have been growing in popularity for the last decade or so.

Size and weight are two of the benefits of LCD computer monitors. CRT monitors take up most of the room on a computer desk, leaving little room for notepads or disks. LCD computer monitors will take up as much space in width, but their depth is approximately half the depth of a CRT monitor. This leaves room for storage behind the monitor that is still convenient and within reach of the user.

The weight of LCD computer monitors is of importance for two reasons. First, since it is lighter, it is easier for you to move the monitor when you get ready to relocate your computer. Many CRT computer monitors weigh about the same as a comparably sized television, and users often struggle to carry them from one room to another. But weight is also a factor in determining the cost of LCD computer monitors. If you are having one shipped to you, the lighter weight equates to reduced shipping costs. This is also a factor for local retailers when they are setting the selling price of LCD computer monitors. Obviously, the less the retailer has to pay for an item, the lower he can set his price.

Graphic artists and illustrators usually prefer LCD computer monitors due to the ability to find higher resolutions and truer colors. Shoppers, however, should keep in mind that, just like the old CRTs, there is a wide variety of resolutions available in LCD computer monitors. Your graphics card will also have a major impact on the quality of the image your monitor produces.

LCD computer monitors use less electricity than comparably sized CRT monitors. This results not only in energy savings, but less heat produced by the monitor. This increases the comfort level of the user.

CRT monitors were also prone to occasional flickering of the screen. While the newer ones have reduced the problem, they have never eliminated it. LCD computer monitors do not suffer from the annoying flickering that can also cause eyestrain.

You should try to avoid touching the screens on LCD computer monitors, and you definitely want to be sure you do not press on them. Also, the screens on LCD computer monitors should not be cleaned with household glass or window cleaners, since ammonia can damage them. Use isopropyl alcohol or vinegar instead, and apply it to a soft rag, never directly on the screen. Other than that, there is little difference between caring for CRT monitors and caring for LCD computer monitors. Dust them and clean them as needed, and never open the case for cleaning. With minimal care, the monitor should last for several years.
